Week 2 : As the SEED grows

Hello Everyone,

It is the second week at the OEDK and things could not be any better. The last days of Engineering Design process boot camp, exciting and so much enjoyable.

Continuing the zoo project

we were introduced to the materials we would need for low fidelity prototyping. These are models to show the general outlook of the design not necessarily the functionality. We scored the different ideas we had in our group and we started making these prototypes on the idea that scored best. It was amazing how we could create different prototypes from things like cardboard, paper and straws to illustrate our ideas.

We then had a workshop where we learnt to use different tools to make more advanced prototypes.

using the jigsaw

On our group, our winning idea was a “salt shaker” where food had to pass through a first bucket through some holes and into a chamber then through some holes to get out to the hog. During the time to create the medium fidelity prototype we realized the design required some rectifications. Our initial idea to have a slider which could sometimes block the holes when the hog pushed the bucket seemed irrelevant. we also realized that the connections between the buckets had some protrusions which posed a safety concern. we changed and rectified these problems when we were making the medium and high fidelity prototypes.

The Medium fidelity design

W

e tested it and saw how well it increased the feeding time for the hog.

Presentations

after the testing and retesting we made a presentation on all the work we had done on the zoo project. that was the final stage of the boot camp. It was unforgettable experience, realizing all the things you have learnt can be translated to something that can make a difference.

New projects (Zip line for All)

We were introduced to 4 new projects and given a chance to choose the ones to do for the rest of the program. I was assigned to the Zip line project were we have to design a harness for Camp for all that can be used for children with different muscle disorder. It is not a new project but a continuation from a senior project. We finished the day by looking at what the seniors did, their strengths and weaknesses.

Had a chance to visit the Rice 360 office at the Bio-science Research Collaborative. It was amazing to see the amazing projects they are working on at the NEST 360 such an inspiration.

June 20th

Today, we formulated some interview questions and met the client(Dr Hunter) to get a better understanding of the problem. We had a SEED lunch and it was awesome getting to interact and know more about Houston. I had Tacos for the first time and it wont be the last, they are amazingly spicy. Heard on how people spend their weekends here and well its better than Netflix.

The SEED was planted and its growing. Planted strong by the roots.

Till next week!!!!!!!!!!!!
